Confession time. I’m the world’s worst blogger. There. I said it! I counted up and I think I had a grand total of 7 blog posts in 2013. Each of which started with “ok, I’m going to try to blog more often” only to be followed with a blog a few weeks later saying “yea, so about that..” I tried and I failed. I have the most awesome clients who have invested in me/my art and I’ve realized that most people don’t get to see all the pretty pictures, minus the few that I sneak peek. I’ve failed at blogging because I’ve never had a system. I’m a procrastinator and therefore, if I don’t have a schedule to follow, it just. won’t. happen. This has been a weakness of mine for as long as I can remember and I can either just leave it at that, or I can put systems in place that can help me manage that better. That’s what I’m about to do with my blogging schedule!
So, ‘what makes you think this time will work?’ you might ask. Well 2 things come to mind that have changed, and that I feel these two things will help me blog more!
- Change of Perspective – I used to think blogging was for ME. I get to show off the pretty pictures I’ve taken which will get more people seeing my work, which gets me more business. All about ME! Well that’s wrong. My perspective has changed. I’ve realized that blogging is a chance to show off my clients! This realization came to me when I had some beautiful photos done by Kristen Lynn Photography and I remembered waiting very [patiently] for her to blog my photos! Ok, that’s a lie. I was NOT patient! I just shy of asking her when she would blog my photos! I had already seen all the pictures she took, yet I could not wait for her to show them off on her blog! It would have been unfair for Kristen to post all the beautiful photos she takes of everyone else, but not post mine! I would wonder if maybe mine weren’t good enough which couldn’t be farther from the truth – I think mine are the BEST! (just a little biased) But that changed how I see blogging. Though blogging could be beneficial in the ways I mentioned, that is not what blogging is all about. It’s about/for the CLIENT!
- Creating a System – Every time I have a session, I write that session on a sticky note that coordinates with the type of session. I bought this beautiful calendar at target for super cheap because it’s June, people! Who buys calendars in June? Well I do! [Benefits of a procrastinator? mabye!] I then can go through and schedule my posts [stick my sticky notes to a date] to make sure I don’t accidentally forget to blog a certain session. Also, with them being color coordinated I can make sure I spread out my session types so I can have variety each week! This way I also know in advance what needs to be blogged, so I’m not sitting there at 9am drawing a blank of what I should post about today – which is bound to end up just getting nothing on the blog – aka 2013! I can pre-blog and have things ready to roll out according to the schedule. We’ll see how this works!
I can’t promise that this system is fool-proof, but it’s more than I’ve ever had before and I ask your patience as I try to grow in this area! I’ll be starting off catching up on the most recent shoots and then as time goes on you’ll be seeing some photos of sessions from last year, because those clients deserve their blog post! Leave some love, enjoy the view and maybe soon YOU will be on the blog!
